If English is your second language, the hardest part of the SIE or Series 7 often isn't the finance — it's learning unfamiliar finance concepts in a language you're still building fluency in. You can understand suitability, accrued interest, or the difference between a primary and secondary offering perfectly well in Spanish or Portuguese, and still stumble when the same idea shows up in dense English exam wording.
That gap is exactly what bilingual tutoring closes. Here's how we think about it, and why it works.
The exam is in English. Your materials are too — on purpose.
Let's be direct about one thing up front: the SIE and the Series 7 are administered in English, and our study materials are in English as well. That's not a limitation — it's the point. You're going to be tested in English, so you practice in English. Reading the real exam vocabulary during prep is part of the preparation, not a barrier to it.
What changes with bilingual tutoring isn't the language of the material. It's the language of the explanation. When a concept doesn't land in English, your tutor switches to Spanish or Portuguese, explains the mechanism until it clicks, and then walks you back to the English term you'll see on test day. You learn the idea in the language you think in, and you practice it in the language you'll be tested in.
Why the "mechanism first" approach matters more for second-language learners
A lot of exam prep leans on memorization — match the term to the definition, repeat. That's fragile for anyone, but it's especially fragile when you're translating in your head at the same time. The fix is to understand why a rule works before you memorize the label. Once you understand that bond prices fall when rates rise because a newly issued bond now pays more, you don't have to memorize the relationship — you can rebuild it under pressure, in any language.
That's the core of how we tutor: explain the mechanism, in whatever language makes it stick, then attach the English vocabulary. The understanding survives the translation; pure memorization usually doesn't.
What a session actually looks like
Tutoring is one-on-one and built around your weak areas, not a fixed script. A typical session:
- You bring the topics or practice questions that are tripping you up.
- Your tutor — who speaks English plus Spanish or Portuguese — diagnoses whether the problem is the concept or the English. Those need different fixes.
- You work through the concept in your stronger language, then re-read the English exam wording together so the term is locked in.
- You leave with a short list of exactly what to drill before the next session.
It's the same approach that works for native English speakers — clear explanations, real exam-style practice, honest feedback — with the language barrier removed.
This is a real exam with a real career on the other side
The SIE is open to anyone 18 or older, no firm sponsorship required, and results are valid for four years. You can read FINRA's own description of the exam on the official SIE exam page at FINRA.org. Passing it — and then a qualification exam like the Series 7 — is the entry point into a securities career in the U.S. Doing that in a second language is harder, but it is absolutely doable with the right support, and plenty of our students have done exactly that.
